FINALLY EARL RAY couldn’t take it anymore. He decided to leave Bubba and Dude at the motel. The two were scary-looking. Not that Earl Ray was any beauty, but when the three of them were together, they could be mistaken for thugs.

He promised himself that once he got the book and sold it to the highest bidder, he’d buy himself an expensive suit, a nice car and always keep a wad of spending money in his pocket. People would look up to him then. Maybe he’d even find himself a nice woman, a lady. Not another ditz like Jerilyn Larch.

“I’m going to go get myself a beer,” Earl Ray told his heavies. He was sure the two had real names, although he’d never asked.

“Whatever.” Dude was sprawled on one of the motel beds watching poker on TV.

“Bring me back something to eat,” Bubba said from where he was doing push-ups on the floor.

“Sure.” Earl Ray already had his story worked out. He’d tell the bartenders that Jerilyn was his sister and their mother was dying. He had to get her back to Arizona before the old gal croaked or Jerilyn would never forgive him.

He hit pay dirt in the third bar.

“Yeah, I saw her,” the bartender said after Earl Ray had described Jerilyn. “She was in here last night.”

“Do you know where I can find her? Time is of the essence.” He’d thrown a twenty-dollar bill down on the bar when he’d ordered a draft beer. He stood now, making it clear he’d be leaving the rest of the twenty as a tip.

“Buck Jones might know. The two of them were talking some last night.”

Knowing Jerilyn, she’d gone home with the man. That would explain why he hadn’t seen her car at any of the few motels in town.

“Where does he live?”

The bartender hesitated, picked up the twenty, then said, “He lives in a house over by the old high school. Well, where the old high school used to be. It burned down about ten years ago.”

Fascinating, Earl Ray thought.

“It’s a blue and white place, on the corner.”

“You know the name of the street?”

“Fourth. Fourth and Third, I think.”

Great directions. Earl Ray thanked him and headed for Buck Jones’s house.
